Video Case: Product design at IDEO
 Innovation and creativity are typically treated as mysterious processes. We will explore how a famous product design firm–IDEO–has used team processes to routinize innovation and creativity. We will explore these issues by watching a short film on the procedures used to encourage innovation at the product design firm IDEO, and discuss ways that their successful practices can be adapted to work in your organizations.

Preparation Questions:

Where do new ideas come from in your organization? What procedures do you have in place in your company to encourage innovation?

Innovation, Productivity and the Digital Organization

Innovation and productivity growth are the keys to raising long term living standards. In recent years, IT has been the catalyst for innovation and productivity, especially in the U.S. However, a major MIT research project looking at over 800 large firms finds that there is a significant payoff only when both IT and organizational investments are made. We have identified seven specific practices of the emerging "Digital Organization" which are correlated with highest performance. These practices form a coherent system, meaning that they fit together and reinforce each other.

We will introduce a tool, the "Matrix of Change" which is designed to help managers navigate through both incremental and disruptive changes that are often associated with new technologies. Everyone will have a chance to use the tool as part of a group exercise.
