Leadership in the Organization
John Van Maanen

Successful implementation of new business strategies and methods is dependent on executives who know how to design and lead organizational change. Despite a decade of change efforts driven by macroeconomic and global forces, the results have been disappointing. Far too often, change efforts have been fragmented and short lived with little measurable influence on business competitiveness and success. To help senior managers in their efforts to bring innovation and change to their organizations, the Leadership Center at the MIT Sloan School of Management has developed an analytic model of the leadership process. The model is described in the pre-reading Leadership in an Age of Uncertainty. The morning's session will review the model and MIT's approach to leadership in general. Some questions that will guide our discussion include: Are the skills required of effective leaders well represented in your own company? What are the leadership strengths and weaknesses of your firm? How would you characterize your own favored leadership capability?

Leadership: A Case Example
Ken Morse

What is the difference between effective leadership skills and good management techniques? When and how are passion, persistence, and workaholic focus required to make a difference? In this session we examine the case of an unknown sports figure who led his team to victory against determined opposition. We draw parallels for today's business managers who face a tsunami of global competition.

Leading Innovation–Perspectives on the Organization
Roberto Fernandez

"Organizational Issues" are often cited as the reason projects get off-track. Managers need to be aware of what these challenges are so that they can be out in front of them before they threaten the success of projects. In this session, we will review several perspectives on the organization, with an eye toward avoiding the roadblocks typically encountered in making change.
